Easter camping adventures . Ended up going to Muloorina Station and Lake Eyre for the first time. Amazing places despite the incredibly friendly flies . The Lake was crunchy and immense, not sure I have comprehended how vast it actually is. And Muloorina blew my mind. A beautiful oasis of large gums and a lagoon fed by a hot bore, in the middle of flat dry land half way between Marree and Lake Eyre. Highly recommended as a camping spot.
Parachilna, Chambers Gorge, Gammon Ranges
What an excellent weekend away, off the grid, full of unexpected experiences and good laughs. A planned trip to Chambers Gorge with our 4WD club went all but according to the plan….. Quick overnight stop at Parachilna and on Sat morning we stopped at Iga Warta on our way to Chambers. There we were greeted with such hospitality that we ended up staying two nights there instead . This place is run by the Coulthard family of the Adnyamathanha people of Flinders Ranges and they love sharing it with visitors. We paid our camping fees of $11 a night, were invited for an AFL grand finals party with nibbles provided, coffee and tea all weekend, cultural tours and a great evening by the fire with songs and stories and traditional damper baked in hot sand and served with quandong jam and cream. All that for free! These guys were amazing. So warm and friendly and inclusive. Might need some help with maintaining their tour bus but its breakdown only added to the charm of the weekend. We will definitely be back . Oh we did get to Chambers Gorge today on our way home . That was also breathtakingly beautiful. We do need some rain up there though, bone dry. Great trip.
Paddling the Diamantina River in flood
Almost a year since the last trip up here . Marree
Mungerannie for a night
On to Birdsville via the Inside Track
Sunrise on the Birdsville billabong . We paddled it last night under the full moon and then a little later in the day in 38°C, even ventured on to the Diamantina River (excuse the water on the lens……. ooops). To say it was special is an understatement. Paddling in the middle of the Outback, watching black swans, pelicans and birds of prey in complete serenity, just magic…. photos can’t do it justice.
Short drive out to Big Red for an explore

Those who use Facebook would have seen a challenge going around where people are asked to post 5 B&W photos over 5 days.
I must admit that turning colour pics that I like into B&W has never appealed to me but I know many that do.
I’ve been asked to “rise to the challenge”. Here are the five days.
While in Broken Hill for the Outback Challenge I headed out to Menindie Lakes for a wander.

It’s been 2 years since I posted about FYRLYT driving lights.
Given it appears to be the most searched page on this site it’s probably time for an update.
Ive added the update to the bottom of the original page at: FYRLYT Article
**UPDATE** September 2014
So, after 2 years of hanging off the front of the Patrol how have they performed?
Pardon the pun – brilliantly!
The mounts are rock solid, the lenses have survived and the original globes are still going strong.
The light output is awesome, the lack of glare is welcome and maintenance free reliability is perfect. They just WORK.
Originally I ran them as one spot and one spread but the light output is so good I now run both as spread beams.
Better than HID? Maybe, but more importantly they are reliable and instantly come on.
Better than an LED light bar? Don’t know, but their range and spread is more than adequate.
Worth the money? For me, yes, as the quality and reliability (sorry to harp on that) make them a worthwhile addition.
As always, my opinion only and all thoughts and comments are welcome.
No affiliation, just a happy customer.
Have (finally) got my photo collection sorted and uploaded at http://photos.touring4x4.com/
Please take a look around and all feedback on the good, bad and ugly is welcome!
While photos can be purchased through this site (eventually) I’m quite happy for people to just look and enjoy.
Here’s a sample.
Went for a day trip with the Whyalla 4WD Club out to Corunna Station, just out of Iron Knob, SA.

Got a new Patrol on loan for the night, thanks to Malcolm from Whyalla Nissan. Very very nice. Fuel consumption around town looks to be about the same as the GTS. Highway fuel is a bit high cruise controlling at 110 (12-13L/100) but its only done 400kms.
Its a fair bit bigger than the GU. Trakta has 4″ lift and 35″ tyres and the new one is still slightly taller. Inside its a massive difference. Could comfortably get a 40L Engel behind the 3rd row seats.
Pretty much did what I wanted to do. Cant take it offroad unfortunately.
Checked the acceleration (like a cut cut snake), braking (sensational – a GU can only dream of stopping this well), around town driveability (slightly thirsty, dead quiet, handles reasonably, bloody big) and a couple of highway runs (reasonable fuel, super quiet, 1800rpm @ 110).
Importantly it passed the Woolies shopping test and driveway cred, so really only has the school run left in the morning. LOL
